GU Hospital Employee Stabbed to Death

A Georgetown University Hospital employee was found dead in her apartment in Southwest, Washington, D.C., on Dec. 7, having suffered several stab wounds.

The victim, Tawana Barnes-Copeland, was discovered when her daughter came home to the apartment on the unit block of Galveston Place, S.W., around 8:30 p.m., according to the Metropolitan Police Department news release.

Police found no signs of forced entry into the apartment and had determined no motives or possible suspects as of Wednesday night.

Barnes, who worked the night shift as a phlebotomist, is survived by three daughters. Hospital employees said that no formal announcement had been made to them, but many were aware of her death.

“I always knew her as real outgoing, real friendly. I would always ask her how she liked her work and she always said she really enjoyed it,” Elaine Purchas, receiving and accessioning technician at the hospital, said.

The MPD homicide branch is conducting an ongoing investigation.

Arianne Worley, the hospital’s director of media relations, declined to comment.
