Ray’s Hell Burger Shuts Original Location

Popular Rosslyn burger restaurants Ray’s Hell Burger and its offshoot Ray’s Hell Burger Too have closed their doors.

“For Rent” signs were discovered on the stores, located on 1725 and 1723 Wilson Blvd., respectively, earlier this week.

The news comes a month after the two locations first shut their doors Jan. 15 for what they told customers at that time was a temporary closure.

However, the restaurants have been embattled in a legal dispute with their landlord since last year.

On Nov. 16, Ray’s owner Michael Landrum filed a lawsuit against the Colonial Village Shopping Center, where the two eateries are housed, according to blog DCist.

Landrum did not respond to The Hoya’s requests for comment on the reasons for the lawsuit in time for press.

About two months later on Jan. 9, the shopping center filed two complaints against Landrum, citing a total of $70,000 in unpaid rent for the two sites, according to local news site Arlington Patch

Despite these closures, the signature burgers — which have found favor with the likes of President Barack Obama — will still be served at Ray’s to the Third, a steakhouse located across the street from its sister locations at 1650 Wilson Blvd.

Ray’s to the Third manager Lucas Glaeser characterized the closure of the other two restaurants as a consolidation.

“We’ve decided to consolidate two locations so technically, we’re not closing — we’re  moving to a bigger, larger space,” Glaeser said.

While the famous eatery has received much acclaim since its opening in 2008, the change may be welcome for some, like Donald Kim (SFS ’16), who has already been to Ray’s Hell Burger five times this academic year.

“There’s always a huge line, very few tables,” Kim said. “For a restaurant that nice, that good, it needs a bigger location.”

Three other steakhouses in the same group — Ray’s the Steaks, Retro Ray’s and Ray’s the Classics — remain open throughout Virginia and Maryland.
