Big East to Pursue 12-Team Football League

The presidents and chancellors of the remaining Big East conference schools held a teleconference Monday morning and agreed to pursue a 12-team football conference.

“On a teleconference earlier today, our presidents and chancellors authorized the Big East Conference to engage in formal discussions with additional institutions and are considering moving to a model that includes 12 football playing schools,” said a statement released by the Big East.

The Big East lost another member school last week, when Texas Christian was invited to join the Big 12 without ever playing a game in the Big East. TCU is expected to accept the invitation sometime on Monday, ESPN reported.

Some of the schools the Big East will reportedly target are Navy, Army, Air Force, East Carolina, Temple, Memphis and Central Florida. Currently, there are six remaining football-playing schools in the Big East, after Syracuse and Pittsburgh defected to the ACC.

Of the six schools targeted, only Memphis and Temple are consistent contenders in basketball and could be strong replacements for Syracuse and Pittsburgh. Among the non-football playing schools are Georgetown, Villanova, Seton Hall, Providence, Marquette, St. John’s and DePaul, although Villanova could potentially move its football program into the Big East. Villanova, like Georgetown, currently competes at the FCS or Division IAA level of football.
