In a shocking upset, the No. 19 Georgetown women’s basketball team (21-9, 9-7 Big East) concluded its season Monday night with a 60-55 loss to South Florida (12-18, 3-13 Big East).

The loss is the fourth in the last five games for the Hoyas, who also fell to St. John’s, DePaul and Connecticut recently. The Blue and Gray’s defeat drops them to seventh place in the conference heading into the Big East tournament, which begins Friday in Hartford, Conn.

Georgetown and South Florida exchanged hoops for the majority of the first half before the Hoyas went on a 5-0 run in the final 1:29 to take a 28-23 lead into the break.

Georgetown maintained its lead until a three-pointer by South Florida senior forward Leondra Doomes-Stephens tied the game at 36 with 15:04 to play. After the Lady Bulls continued their run with two more threes, the Blue and Gray went on an 11-2 run to take a 47-44 lead with 5:32 remaining in the contest.

A 12-3 run by South Florida over the next five minutes, however, catapulted the home team to a 56-50 lead with just 46 seconds to go. The Lady Bulls eventually prevailed, 60-55. It was their first victory over a ranked opponent since Feb. 5, 2008, when the Lady Bulls defeated then-No. 25 DePaul.

Doomes-Stephens led all scorers with 25 points on 8-of-11 shooting — including 5-of-7 from beyond the arc — while also adding 13 rebounds and four assists. Junior guard Andrea Smith also contributed 24 points on 8-of-20 shooting for the Lady Bulls.

Georgetown junior guard Rubylee Wright, who had 12 points on 4-of-9 shooting, led the Hoyas offensively. Sophomore guard Sugar Rodgers, who came into the match averaging a team-high 18.5 points per game, only contributed 10 points on 4-of-11 shooting from the floor.

As a team, the Blue and Gray shot only 35.3 percent from the field, including only 5-of-19 on three-point attempts. South Florida, on the other hand, sank 40.4 percent of their shots and shot 9-of-24 from beyond the arc.

Though they owned a 37-34 rebounding edge, the Hoyas forced only 12 South Florida turnovers — nearly 10 below their season average

The Hoyas will look to rebound over the weekend in the Big East tournament as they try to secure a bid in the NCAA tournament, which begins March 19.
