The field hockey team (6-10, 1-3 Big East) lost twice this weekend, falling 11-0 to No. 8 Syracuse (10-4, 4-0 Big East) on Saturday before going down 3-2 in overtime against Towson (7-8) on Sunday.

Both games were played at the Hoyas’ home venue, the William I. Jacobs Recreational Complex at American University.

Sophomore goalie Briana Pereira recorded six saves in Saturday’s game, but Syracuse netted four goals in the first half followed by seven in the second. Maggie Befort and Ashtin Klingler led the Orange with three goals each. On the other end of the field, the Hoyas were unable to get off a shot in the contest against the highly ranked Orange.

On Sunday, the Blue and Gray fell in overtime to the Towson Tigers despite Pereira’s 10 saves and sophomore forward Catherine Shugrue’s 13th goal of the year. The match was played in support of the Play 4 the Cure campaign, a campaign to find a cure for breast cancer.

Shugrue’s tally moved her into second place on the Georgetown single-season scoring list ahead of Jessica Quinn who scored 12 goals for the Hoyas back in 2003.

Towson scored first just three minutes into the game, as Kristie Blumer converted a rebound after a Pereira save. Sophomore midfielder Claire Mittermiller responded to tie the game for the Blue and Gray at the 9:26 mark with an unassisted goal on a shot into the right side of the cage. Shugrue then gave the Hoyas the lead just two minutes later, scoring off a penalty corner with an assist from senior defender Annika Bannon, her seventh helper of the year.

The score remained unchanged through halftime, but Towson’s Tabi Hatch tied the score up with a goal off a penalty corner halfway through the second half. Neither team managed to score for the next 20 minutes, sending the game into overtime. After only one minute and 13 seconds of overtime play, Towson’s Katie DeFilippo put one past a sliding Pereira to give the Tigers the comeback win.

The Hoyas will look to rebound next weekend when they travel to Pennsylvania for their final road trip of the year. Georgetown will take on Villanova in a Big East contest on Friday at 7 p.m. Then, the team will travel to Easton, Pa., to face off against Lafayette on Sunday at 1 p.m.
