While the Georgetown swimming and diving team’s return from a winter break training trip to Puerto Rico was marred by the fall of freshman swimmer Michelle Konkoly from a fifth-floor window in Village C West, the team will still head back to the pool this Saturday to host American and James Madison.

The meet will be the first time the Hoyas have seen action since the week before Thanksgiving at the Patriot Invitational. At that meet Georgetown’s men’s and women’s squads finished fifth and fourth, respectively.

Head Coach Jamie Holder believes the team has improved since then, citing the progress they made in Puerto Rico.

“Training is about the team as a whole,” Holder said, emphasizing that he thought all his swimmers worked hard and got something out of the trip.

Several swimmers still need to swim fast enough times to qualify for the Big East tournament, set for Louisville, Ky., Feb. 11-19.

Despite only three meets between now and the Big East tournament, Holder is optimistic that at least some of the remaining swimmers will qualify on Saturday.

Georgetown has faced American twice before in the season, including at the Patriot Invitational. James Madison will bring only their women’s team, adding pressure to the Hoyas on that side. Still, Holder is confident that his female swimmers will be able to cope with the pressure.

“The women’s team might outscore the men’s team at the Big East tournament,” he said.

Big things are expected Saturday from sophomore Paul Quincy and freshman Lauren Opartny, who both broke school records at the Patriot Invitational. Holder also mentioned junior Greg Germain as a swimmer likely to perform well on Saturday.

Holder was also pleased with the progress of the diving squad.

“They were up on the boards for a week [in Puerto Rico] and they are doing well,” he said.

The meet begins at 1 p.m. at McCarthy Pool inside Yates Field House.
