Resume-building is an important part of life on the Hilltop, and there will be no exception when the Hoyas take to the pitch at North Kehoe this afternoon.

With No. 22 West Virginia (8-3, 4-0 Big East) coming to town, Georgetown (9-3, 3-1 Big East) sees an opportunity to add a new line of ink to their NCAA tournament resume. In this clash of Big East powers — each team sits at the top of their divisional standings heading into the contest — both teams are aware of the match’s implications.

“[It] really is a big game. It’s one of those games that we’re not trying to put too much pressure on it, but it’s an NCAA resume game,” Head Coach Dave Nolan said. “Anytime you can start knocking off teams in the Top 25, the Top 50, it helps when you go put your case to the NCAA at the end of the year. And West Virginia will be aware of that … the game means something.”

Both teams enter the game in good form: The Mountaineers are riding a six-game winning streak, while the Hoyas return home winners in six of their past seven contests, including last weekend’s successful trip to New York. In addition to affecting potential at-large bids and seeding when the NCAA tournament rolls around, the matchup offers the chance for each team to solidify their standing atop the league table. A victory for the Blue and Gray would give them 12 points in just five conference games, nearly enough to ensure a spot in the postseason.

In regards to this fixture, however, history has not been kind to Georgetown. West Virginia leads the all-time series, 12-3, including a 6-2 mark on the Hilltop and five wins the past six meetings. Last season the Hoyas fell, 3-0, to the Mountaineers in Morgantown but prevailed, 2-1, at home in 2009.

“West Virginia’s a great team, a fantastic program, they’ll give us another national scout should we be able to take care of business,” Nolan said. “They’re a good team but they’re beatable.”

The Blue and Gray are prepared for the visitors’ physical, direct style of play. West Virginia’s roster features more size than Georgetown’s — especially due to injuries to the hosts’ taller starters — and the Hoyas must be wary of the Mountaineers’ aerial presence.

“They’ve scored 21 goals: Five have been off corner kicks, five have been from crosses where kids have headed it in and five have been shots from 25 yards off,” Nolan said. “So they do three things: They’re dangerous on corner kicks, they cross the ball a lot, and they shoot from everywhere.”

Georgetown rounds out the weekend with a visit from Big East bottom-feeders Pittsburgh (1-7-4, 0-2-2 Big East), who have struggled throughout the season and are winless this September.

“They’re a very dangerous [matchup] because as much as West Virginia [could be] a huge win, Pittsburgh could be a disastrous loss,” Nolan said.

Until Friday’s match is finished, however, the Mountaineers will have the Hoyas’ undivided attention.

“We’re well aware of what these two games need to be, but thankfully they’re both at home, which will help, and we’re playing well. We’ve played well all year; I don’t think we’ve had a flat game,” Nolan said. “There’s no easy games, so we’ll worry about West Virginia first, see what we can get out of that, and then we can start focusing on Pittsburgh.”

Senior forward Camille Trujillo will lead the charge for the Hoyas after being named Big East player of the week, thanks to her three goals and an assist against Syracuse and St. John’s last weekend.

The Hoyas and Mountaineers are set to start at 3 p.m. this afternoon at North Kehoe. The Blue and Gray conclude the weekend homestand this Sunday with a 1 p.m. kick-off against the Panthers.
