MEN’S TENNIS | Hoyas Fall to Crosstown Rivals

The Georgetown men’s tennis team (6-11, 1-1 Big East) fell to local rival George Washington (13-8, 6-0 Atlantic 10) in a 6-1 blowout on Saturday.

“This may have been the best team that GW has ever had,” Head Coach Gordie Ernst said. “GW beat St. John’s the week before [St. John’s] beat us 7-0. That’s how good they are.”

George Washington picked up wins in all three matches to secure the doubles point.

At second doubles, sophomore Charlie Caris and senior Bryan Miller were quickly dispatched, 8-1. The duo of freshman Casey Distaso and junior Brian Ward followed with an 8-3 loss at third doubles. The closest doubles match was at first singles, which Georgetown juniors Michael Clarke and Andrew Bruhn dropped, 8-4.

In singles competition, George Washington capitalized on its one-point lead. Colonial junior Richard Blumenfeld crushed Ward in straight sets, 6-0, 6-2. The Hoyas also lost at third and fifth singles and trailed, 4-0.

Clarke proved that he is one of the top players on the Georgetown squad, putting up a tough fight at first singles. But after winning the first set, 2-6, he was unable to hold on and lost the next two sets, 6-4, 6-3.

George Washington also rallied from behind at fourth singles, where Distaso lost, 4-6, 6-2, 6-1, despite leading after the first set.

Despite losing six matches, Georgetown received a promising performance from Bruhn at second singles. He picked up the Hoyas’ lone victory in a tough 7-5, 2-4, 6-4 battle.

The Hoyas head to Baltimore next to take on UMBC on April 16.

“We don’t play for a week,” Ernst said. “But the weather is hot and the guys are pumped up and happy to play.”

The Retrievers will be another challenge for Ernst’s squad.

“We have no cupcake teams on our schedule this year. It’s better to lose against a tough opponent because you learn something from it,” Ernst said. “UMBC is another scholarship team that has beaten us in the past. It will be another tough match.”
