When the going gets tough, Georgetown starts winning.
Despite adverse playing conditions, three Hoyas placed in the top 20 at the Big Five Invitational, earning the team a tie for second place in Philadelphia this past weekend.
“The Philadelphia Cricket Club is a very tough course,” Head Coach Tommy Hunter said. “It was playing firm and fast, and the weather was really windy conditions that are not conducive to us playing well – but we did.”
Tim Hage, who led the team with an eight-over-par 150, good enough for a seventh-place individual finish.
“I was very pleased with Tim,” Hunter said of the sophomore from Ivyland, Pa. “He has really been our cornerstone this fall.”
Hager’s solid effort was boosted by junior Tim oynihan’s nine-over-par 151 and senior Matt Busa’s 10-over-par 152, scores that produced 10th- and 17th-place finishes.
The effort by the talented trio won Georgetown its best finish so far this season. The Hoyas’ 36-over-par 604 over two rounds tied them with tournament host Penn, second only to Columbia’s top score of 23-over-par 591. Georgetown’s previous top finish was a fifth-place effort at the Adams Cup in Newport, R.I., on Sept. 27.
Stellar play from sophomore Pat Sherry and freshman Trevor atese also helped rocket the Hoyas back into competition.
“This weekend really put us back in position against teams we play regularly, like Penn State, William & Mary and Richmond,” Hunter said.
The Hoyas bested all three of those squads last weekend. The Spiders did their best to catch the Hoyas as they did at the Joe Agee Invitational last week, but ultimately finished fourth, while the Tribe and the Nittany Lions finished in a draw for fifth.
Hunter hopes the Hoyas can carry their momentum home to the Hilltop. Georgetown plays host to the Hoya Invitational this weekend at Four Streams Golf Course in Bealsville, Md. It will be the Hoyas last event of the fall.
“We’re looking forward to this weekend,” Hunter said. “This tournament will give us a chance to regroup and look ahead to the spring.”
Tournament action at Four Streams opens Saturday and finishes Sunday.
