The national search for Georgetown’s next men’s lacrosse coach ended in the D.C. area Tuesday morning, when theHoyas named Maryland assistant Kevin Warne as their next head coach.

Warne has been on Maryland’s staff the last two seasons, both of which saw the Terrapins reach the NCAA championship game. Maryland also defeated Georgetown both years, hanging 20-8 and 16-11 losses on the Hoyas in 2011 and 2012, respectively.

“Kevin’s commitment to student-athlete welfare and his passion for the game makes him the perfect person to take over our lacrosse program at this time,“ Georgetown Director of Intercollegiate Athletics Lee Reed said in a statement.

Warne fills the vacancy left by Dave Urick, the legendary coach who retired in July after 23 years with the Hoyas. Filling Urick’s shoes will be a challenging task for any coach, since Urick won 223 games and never had a losing season on the Hilltop.

At Maryland and in prior coaching stints at Harvard and UMBC, Warne made his mark as a defensive specialist. In addition to the two national championship appearances, the Terrapins produced seven All-Americans during Warne’s two years in College Park.

Harvard had an especially strong defense during Warne’s tenure in Cambridge, ranking third in the nation in goals allowed per game.

“He is considered to be one of the top young assistants in the country and he has a terrific track record of success as an assistant coach, including appearances in the last two national championship games,” Reed said in his statement.

The new coach is also known for his manic sideline presence, which some publications credited for creating energy among Maryland players. Before working at Harvard, Warne was associate head coach at UMBC, where he gained considerable recruiting experience.

Warne may need to put that experience to immediate use. In addition to Urick’s retirement, former associate head coach Matt Kerwick left the school in July after pleading guilty to DWI.

The new coach is a 2000 graduate of Hofstra where he was a two-time all-America East player. His coaching career began with the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy and also included four years as an assistant at Delaware.

The Hoyas rallied to finish last season with a 7-6 record, ensuring that Urick would never preside over a losing season. However, the Blue and Gray are losing a considerable amount of talent from last year’s squad and will need to begin the process of reloading immediately.
