MEN’S AND WOMEN’S GOLF | Hoyas Show Potential in Season Opener

The Georgetown women’s golf team started its spring season at Briar’s Creek Invitational hosted by the College of Charleston on March 18 and 19. Earlier in the week, the men’s team kicked things off at the University of South Florida Invitational in Tampa, Fla., on March 11 and 12.

After the opening round at the USF Invitational for the men, juniors Eduardo Blochtein and Hardin Councill sat tied for sixth place with a pair of 70s. The Hoyas were in third place in a field of 15 teams with a team score of 288 after the first day.

At the end of Tuesday’s action at Tampa Palms Golf and Country Club, the Hoyas finished in eighth place, wrapping up the 2019 USF Invitational with a team score of 897. USF won the event with a score of 854. Blochtein led the Hoyas’ team effort and tied for 12th overall after rounds of 70, 77 and 72 (219). Freshman Will O’Neill was close behind after shooting 73, 74 and 74 (221) to tie for 21st.

The women’s team faced a strong 17-team field at the Briar’s Creek Invitational. After Monday, they found themselves in 15th place with a team score of 605 through 36 holes. Senior Alexa Popowitz was the top finisher for the Blue and Gray, finishing in 57th place after carding a three-round score of 12-over par 228. Senior Christina Parsells followed up for the Hoyas in 67th place with a 16-over par 232.

By the end of Tuesday’s final round at The Golf Club at Briar’s Creek, the Hoyas jumped up one spot to 14th place, finishing ahead of Boston College, Charleston Southern and University of North Carolina Asheville. Michigan State won the event with a team score of 8-under par 856.  

Georgetown women’s golf will resume action at the Bryan National Collegiate, March 29 through March 31 in Greensboro, North Carolina. The men’s team will compete next in the Florida Atlantic University Spring Invitational in Boca Raton on March 29 and 30.
