The D.C. Council recently approved the addition of a Circulator route that will run between the Dupont Circle and Rosslyn Metro stops starting in fall 2010, according to John Lisle, District Department of Transportation spokesperson. The service will replace the Blue Bus, or Metro Connection bus, that runs on that loop.

While the service is the same, the Circulator route will probably cost less than the Blue Bus route, Lisle said.

“It makes sense because we already subsidize the Blue Bus,” Lisle said. “For us, it would be an easy transition.”

Councilman Jack Evans (D-Ward 2), chair of the Committee on Public Works and Transportation, introduced the DC Circulator Bus Jurisdiction Expansion Amendment Act of 2009, which allows the Circulator to operate outside the district.

The Circulator currently runs every 10 minutes on four different routes. One route runs through the Georgetown area between the intersection of Whitehaven Street NW, near the Georgetown Law Center, and Union Station. The Circulator has additional routes that serve other areas in western D.C.

The details of the new Circulator service, such as additional buses and the exact route, have not been worked out, according to Lisle.

Kwame Brown, D.C. councilmember and member of the CPWT, proposed the idea of additional Circulator routes, including one from Pennsylvania Avenue SE to Southern Avenue, if a route were to cross into Virginia, his press secretary, Michael Price, said.

The Wisconsin-Whitehaven Circulator Route was almost reduced to service south of M street in the fall of 2009 due to spending cuts. After protests to the cut by the Citizen’s Association of Georgetown, in September 2009, Mayor Adrian Fenty announced that the route would remain intact .
