More than six months after former women’s golf coach Patty Post left Georgetown, the Hoyas finally have a new head coach. Katie Brophy, previously an assistant at Indiana, will replace Mary Mattson, who served as the Georgetown interim head coach this season.

Spending time on the course with the Blue and Gray will be nothing new for Brophy, who was a standout golfer at Notre Dame. Named an all-Big East women’s golfer three times with the Fighting Irish, Brophy graduated with a degree in sociology in 2006.

After graduation, Brophy headed from South Bend to Bloomington, where she served as an assistant for the Hoosiers. Among her responsibilities with the Indiana squad were recruiting, on-course coaching and managing the team’s budget.

Indiana showed significant improvement during Brophy’s time with the team. The highlights of her five-year tenure include three top five finishes in the Big Ten tournament and a 2008 trip to the NCAA East Regional.

“She has been a large part of our success over the past five years and I am positive she will have great success with her team at Georgetown,” Indiana head coach Clint Wallman said in a statement released by the IU athletic department.

Brophy also found time to hit the books during her time at Indiana, earning a master’s degree in athletic administration/sports management in 2009. She completed a Ph. D. in human performance in December.

The program Brophy inherits at Georgetown has already made strides under the leadership of Post – who left the Hilltop in January to helm the newly created Delaware women’s golf program – and stayed constant during Mattson’s brief reign.

Led by returning senior Eunae Jo, the Hoyas finished fourth in April’s Big East tournament. Even so, Georgetown was nearly fifty strokes behind the tournament’s eventual winner, Brophy’s alma mater Notre Dame.

The best result during Post’s tenure on the Hilltop was a third place finish in the 2009 Big East tournament. Contending for a Big East title and building up the Hoyas’ paltry total of three team wins will be Brophy’s primary goals over the next few years.

“This is a tremendous opportunity at one the world’s finest institutions, and I can’t wait to get started,” Brophy said in a prepared statement.
