The Georgetown men’s lacrosse team came out on top of the Marquette Golden Eagles in a well-fought Big East men’s lacrosse battle. The game was neck and neck from start to finish, with the Hoyas scoring three goals in the fourth period to make the difference.

This was the second matchup this season between No. 10 Georgetown (8-1, 7-1 Big East) and Marquette (1-7, 0-6 Big East). The Hoyas won the first matchup 20-13 March 6, setting a season high in goals scored. 

Georgetown entered the game with the fifth-ranked scoring offense and the first-ranked scoring defense in NCAA Division I lacrosse, as well as the best average scoring margin, winning its matches by nearly eight goals per game on average.

Graduate attacker Jake Carraway and junior attacker Dylan Watson, who contributed four goals each, led the Hoyas to victory. Carraway, who has been a dominant force for Georgetown all season, entered the game seventh in the nation in goals per game, averaging 4.14. This matchup marked the 38th straight game in which Carraway scored a goal. 

Marquette’s offense was a one-man show. Attacker Devon Cowan scored six of the Golden Eagles’ eight goals, a new personal career high. 

On the defensive side of the ball, Georgetown’s senior goalie Owen McElroy delivered another strong performance with nine saves. McElroy’s .570 save percentage on the season leads all Big East starters.

Watson helped get the Hoyas off to a strong start in the first period. A quick pass from graduate attacker Nicky Petkevich found Watson open right in front of the goal at 11:07. This was followed by Carraway scoring two quick goals of his own with 7:43 and 7:19 left in the period, giving the Hoyas an early 3-0 lead. 

Cowan got the Golden Eagles back into the game, scoring two goals in rapid succession. With 5:52 left in the period, Cowan made the game 3-2. Georgetown quickly responded with a goal by Petkovich. The first period ended with the Hoyas up 4-2.

An early second period goal by attacker Jake Stegman brought Marquette back within one goal of Georgetown’s lead. Stegman scored his first goal of the season, going behind his back to shoot the ball into the back of the net at 8:05 in the second period.

Just like the first period, the Hoyas quickly responded with a goal from Watson, pushing the lead back to two at 5-3. 

It seemed as though Georgetown would enter halftime still up by two, but a third goal by Cowan with five seconds left in the period tightened the game back to a one-point difference.

The Golden Eagles struck first in the third period, tying the game at 5-5 after another goal from Cowan with 10:40 left. Following the trend of the earlier two periods, the Hoyas quickly responded and took the lead with a goal from Bundy at 9:46. Less than a minute later, Watson scored his third goal of the game, giving Georgetown a 7-5 lead.

This lead proved short-lived after three unanswered goals from Marquette left the Hoyas trailing 8-7. 

The fourth period, however, was dominated by Georgetown. The Hoyas controlled the ball on both ends, taking seven more shots than the Golden Eagles. After Carraway’s fourth goal of the game put Georgetown up 10-8 with 2:58 left, the game was all but over. 

Up next on the Hoyas’ schedule is a top ten rematch against the No. 5 University of Denver Pioneers (9-2, 7-0 Big East) on April 17. The Pioneers are responsible for Georgetown’s only loss of the season, when the Hoyas fell 7-13 in Denver on March 16.
