Phishing Attacks Target GU Email

Chief Information Officer Lisa Davis extended her recommendation to all university email users to change their passwords in an email Friday afternoon.

Davis sent an email Monday informing all students, faculty and staff of a phishing attack on Georgetown email addresses and recommended that only users who clicked on links in the phishing email change their passwords. In Friday’s email, Davis recommended that all users change theirNetID passwords.

The first email referred to only a single phishing attack, but Friday’s email suggested that Georgetown was recently targeted by multiple phishing attacks and fraudulent activity.

Davis said that increased phishing attempts, the prevalence of mobile devices and more sophisticated viruses make protecting Georgetown’s computer systems more difficult.

“While Georgetown has been diligent about system protections and identifying compromised accounts, the risk landscape has changed,” Davis wrote. “As your password is stored and used on more systems and mobile devices, the chances of malicious software, theft or loss of mobile devices, or fraudulent attempts to get your username and password have increased.”
