FIELD HOCKEY | Hoyas Drop Consecutive Matches to Quinnipiac and American

Georgetown’s field hockey team fell to both Quinnipiac and American over the weekend. The game against the Quinnipiac Bobcats marked the first conference loss for the Hoyas, while the loss to American University’s Eagles dropped the Hoyas’ record to 5-5.

The Hoyas (5-5) faced off against the Bobcats (3-6) at home Sept. 27. The game went scoreless through the third quarter despite the fact that several players on both teams made shots on goal. Georgetown sophomore goaltender Ciara Weets denied Quinnipiac sophomore forward Brooke Whipkey, freshman forward Julianna Cappello, graduate student midfielder Bianka Strubbe and senior forward Valerie Perkins from scoring in the first three periods.

Georgetown’s freshman midfielder Ellie Maransky was the first player to find the goal on either side, scoring her second goal of the season with 6:05 remaining in the period. Assisted with a feed by senior midfielder Michaela Bruno, Maransky pushed the Hoyas to a late lead, only to be thwarted by the Bobcats.

With 31 seconds left on the clock, Cappello was able to score a game-tying goal for the Bobcats with the help of Strubbe, who fed the goal into the circle, and Whipkey, who redirected the ball into the air. This goal is a career first for Cappello, who has played in just eight collegiate games thus far.

The game winner was decided by a shootout in which sophomore midfielder Halle Gill and senior back Emily Fraser scored for the Hoyas. This was not enough to overtake Quinnipiac, as three of their players — Cappello, Strubbe and sophomore defender Amanda Funaro — scored for the Bobcats, cementing their victory over the Hoyas.

After Friday’s loss against the Bobcats, the Hoyas faced off against the Eagles (5-4) at the Jacobs Complex on Sept. 29, where the Eagles eventually came back in the fourth quarter to secure the win in the Hoyas’ second consecutive game with a blown lead.

The nonconference game began slowly, remaining scoreless through the first two quarters. With less than three minutes remaining in the third quarter, junior forward Cami Osborne scored for the Hoyas with an assist from junior midfielder Jax van der Veen, making this her third goal of the year.

Two minutes into the fourth quarter, senior forward Jette Dieckmann tied the game for American with the help of an assist from sophomore forward Aidan Rossman on what was Dieckmann’s second goal of the season. Dieckmann later assisted sophomore forward Hannah Moser with her third goal — and first game-winner — of the season. This gave the Eagles a late lead in the game, with less than eight minutes left in the final quarter. Despite their efforts, the Hoyas were unable to tie the game.

The Hoyas will travel to Virginia to play Old Dominion at L.R. Hill Sports Complex on Oct. 4, followed by a nonconference game against William & Mary at Busch Field on Oct. 6. Georgetown last played Old Dominion on Sept. 28, 2018, winning in a 2-1 upset against the No. 16-ranked team. The Hoyas most recently played William & Mary on Sept. 9, 2016, falling to the team 2-6.
