Campus Spotlight

The Post-Baccalaureate Pre-Medical Student Association was started in the summer of 2010 to enrich the growing post-baccalaureate pre-medical community on campus. Since its inception, the PBPMSA has organized a number of events and has built a strong network for incoming PBPM students.

The PBPMSA has been able to sponsor speaker sessions with various medical school deans to provide tailored admissions advice to suit post-baccalaureate applicants’ unique needs. It has also played host to holiday parties and weekend barbecues, organized group volunteer opportunities and conducted journal club discussions. This year has also included two inaugural events allowing PBPM students to serve communities at home and abroad.

Over spring break, PBPM student Eammon Grosek (COL ‘10) led a group of students on a medical aid trip to Honduras. Students on this venture worked in a clinic in rural Honduras for three days. In addition to providing care to over 600 patients in three days, the group laid the foundation for a new school and visited an orphanage in Junquillo.

Currently the PBPMSA is working on hosting the Hurry Up for Health 8K run/walk on Saturday, April 9, to benefit the Arlington Academy of Hope. AAH works to provide medical care and education to children and families in rural Uganda. One hundred percent of proceeds from the Hurry Up for Health 8K event will go to providing AAH with in-country volunteer and program assistance. Lauren O’Rourke, PBPM student and race director, will be leading a group of students to work in an AAH clinic this summer in Bupoto, Uganda. You are invited to join the PBPMSA on April 9 as it continues to build a bridge of health and education around the world.
