The Quick Dish

It’s no secret that we all love pizza. It’s simple, it’s delicious and it’s filling. You can have it for lunch, dinner, as a late-night snack, or cold for breakfast the next morning. Unfortunately, the only experience most Georgetown students have with pizza is the weekly 3 a.m. slices at Tuscany after a ragin’ night out, or the occasional Domino’s pizza at bland club meetings. But outside of Prospect Street, there are a wealth of pizza places in D.C. that are a cut above the rest. Below are a few, which not only happen to be excellent, but also relatively close by.

Kavanagh’s Pizza Pub – 2400 Wisconsive Ave. NW

Pizza and Pub — sounds good so far! Down on Wisconsin, this place is also a bit of a walk. Kavanagh’s serves more than just pizza. There are appetizers, salads and other entrees in addition to their wood-fired pies. The pizza comes in 10, 12 and 14 inches and there is the option to make your own or to choose from the pre-designed pies. The crust is also excellent for those who appreciate the crisp crunch of a brick-oven pizza. There is a wide selection to choose from so whether or not your companion is in the mood for pizza, all should be delicious.

2 Amys – 3715 Macomb St. NW

Claimed to be the best pizza in D.C., all those who try some of the amazing pie fall in love. A bit past the National Cathedral, it’s a hike from the hilltop, but it is very much worth it. Being a personal lover of this pizza let me say that it is all about the crust and the ingredients. The crust is amazingly chewy and just the right thickness. The extra virgin olive oil used infuses the pizza with flavor and the toppings are all authentic and delicious. They also serve D.O.C. pizza (Denominazione di Origine Controllata) which ensures that the pizza adheres to all of the traditional requirements that make it an authentic Neapolitan pizza. Best place in D.C.

Pizzeria Paradiso – 3282 M St. NW

This M Street eatery has one of the best combinations of college cuisine: pizza and beer. Pizzeria Paradiso delivers excellently on both accounts. The selection of beers that this establishment has reminds all patrons that this is a birreria as well as a pizzeria. Pizza comes either in personal 8 inches or 12 inches if you are sharing. There are specialty pizzas or there is the option of making your own. The ingredients are fresh and the toppings are many with choices such as zucchini, mussels and prosciutto. Diners all love the crust. The atmosphere is warm and inviting, making Pizzeria Paradiso a great place to enjoy some tasty pie and a nice cold beer.

The glory of Philly P’s is gone, but by no means has the pizza scene in D.C. disappeared with it. A centuries old dish, pizza is thriving in the area. The classic, brick oven approach is making a big comeback, and for good reason — the pizzas are delectable. The three restaurants above, although excellent, are by no means the only ones who are doing things the right way in D.C. No, you most likely won’t be able to drench your pies in ranch, but rest assured, you’ll leave more than happy. Just make sure you go before 3 a.m.
