The Georgetown field hockey team fell to No. 19 Liberty last Friday, but bounced back with a victory against Towson on Sunday.

In a game where both teams were looking for their 10th win, the Liberty Flames (10-4, 5-0 Big East) defeated the Georgetown Hoyas (10-5, 2-3 Big East) with a score of 2-1.

Liberty senior forward Moniek van Aarle put the Flames on the board in the first four minutes of the match, but the Hoyas’ defense did not allow another goal for the rest of the period.

Sophomore forward Cami Osborne, junior midfielder Michaela Bruno and sophomore forward Nell van Schaack each totalled a shot, while freshman goalkeeper Ciara Weets made three saves in the first half.

The score remained 1-0 until the 57th minute when Liberty senior midfielder Abby Julius converted a goal off the team’s fifth corner of the contest, increasing Liberty’s lead to two goals.

Georgetown responded late, scoring a goal with just over a minute left in regulation. Bruno passed to junior forward Lindsay Getz who knocked the ball into the left corner of the net for a goal.

However, it was too little too late: Liberty held on to the lead, winning the match 2-1. The Flames outshot the Hoyas 18-4, and drew all eight corners of the match. Weets finished the game with eight saves.

Following its loss to Liberty, Georgetown edged Towson (1-12, 0-3 CAA) in a tight match, winning 2-1 on Sunday. The Hoyas’ win marks the first time the program has reached double digit victories since 2001.

Towson sophomore defender Jenna Florenzo opened the scoring off a rebound in the 25th  minute to take the lead.

In the 31st minute, junior back Emily Fraser passed the ball to Osborne, who tied the score with a long-range strike.

The Hoyas took the lead 12 minutes into the second half when sophomore back Anna Farley found the back of the net off a rebound, putting Georgetown up 2-1.

In the 65th minute, the Hoyas survived a breakaway scoring opportunity from Towson’s leading scorer, senior midfielder Katie McNeel. Weets came up with a diving save to preserve the lead and grab the win.

Head coach Christy Longacre said the Hoyas were more organized defensively in their loss to Liberty, but found space to score in their win over Towson.

“Friday we did a better job of communicating and organizing. […] We were more aware in trying to use each other better defensively.” Longacre said in an interview with The Hoya. “Today we made it very difficult on ourselves by trying to go through the middle. When we did move the ball and moved it outside, we were very successful.”

Georgetown outshot Towson 8-5, and had 15 penalty corners to Towson’s one. Weets achieved three saves in the game.

The Hoyas will be back at Cooper Field this weekend, facing Providence on Friday Oct. 19 at 2 p.m. and Longwood on Sunday Oct. 21 at 1 p.m.
