The Georgetown field hockey team competed in two penalty shootout games last week, falling to Providence on Friday and edging out Longwood on Sunday.

In Georgetown’s (11-6, 2-4 Big East) matchup against Providence (11-6, 4-2 Big East), the Friars scored the first goal of the game with a minute remaining in the first half off a short-range strike by junior midfielder Mary O’Reilly.

In the 62nd minute, senior midfielder Sam Hickey scored her first goal of the season to tie the game at 1-1 and force the contest into overtime.

During the two 10-minute overtime periods, the Hoya defense held strong and freshman goalkeeper Ciara Weets saved three scoring opportunities from the Friars. Georgetown’s attack could not find a way to break the tie and, after 20 minutes, the match went into a penalty shootout.

The Friars grabbed a 3-0 advantage in the shootout, and O’Reilly scored again to clinch the victory. Providence’s goalkeeper blocked all of Georgetown’s chances on cage.

The loss eliminated the Hoyas from competing in the Big East championship.

Before Sunday’s match against Longwood, Georgetown honored its four seniors for the program’s Senior Day: forward Helena Masiello, Sam Hickey, midfielder Katie Maransky and goalkeeper Chloe Verweil.

The Hoyas defeated the Lancers 2-1, again competing in two overtime periods and a shootout. The contest marked Georgetown’s last non-conference game of the season.

Sophomore back Anna Farley opened the scoring with a goal off a penalty corner, putting Georgetown on the board five minutes into the game. The assists were awarded to Masiello and Maransky.

Longwood tied the score 1-1 in the 23rd minute with a close-range shot. By halftime, the Hoyas and the Lancers had each taken three shots.

Georgetown and Longwood continued to be evenly matched for the rest of regulation, as neither team found the back of the net. After 70 minutes of play, the game headed into overtime.

Once again, the 20 minute overtime period ended without a goal, and the contest entered a penalty shootout.

Freshman back Sydney Stephenson and Masiello both scored in the shootout to give Georgetown the lead before the Lancers’ fifth shot. Weets blocked Longwood’s last shot in the shootout to secure the Hoyas’ victory.

Georgetown will be back on Cooper Field on Oct. 26 to host the reigning national champions, No. 5 University of Connecticut. Game time is set for 2 p.m. and will be the final game of the Hoyas’ season.
