Man Snatches Student’s Wallet on 36th Street

A Georgetown student was robbed on the 1200 block of 36th street early Sunday morning.

The student was taking a photograph at approximately 12:25 a.m. when an unknown suspect swiped her wallet from her hand and fled, according to a Public Safety Alert sent to the campus community Tuesday evening.

The wallet contained personal information but no valuables, according to the PSA. The victim sustained no injuries.

The incident was originally reported to the Metropolitan Police Department; the Department of Public Safety learned of the incident on Nov. 2, according to the PSA. The investigation, a joint operation between DPS and MPD, is ongoing.

The suspect is described as a thin black male, 6’2″ and wearing a black shirt and blue pants.

The robbery bears similarities to a string of iPhone thefts that occurred in late September. In these incidents, multiple residents reported that iPhones were snatched out of their hands as they were walking on streets near campus.

DPS Associate Director Joseph Smith acknowledged the recent spike in such crime and urged students to take precautionary measures.

“We just caution any student out there to be very discrete with their cell phone and wallet. The more it’s out in public view, the more of a temptation it can be for a criminal to grab it and run,” Smith said.
