The Georgetown sailing team put in a strong performance last weekend at the Navy Spring Regatta in Annapolis, Md. Though the team finished seventh overall in the regatta, the Hoyas tallied a trio of first-place finishes in the two-day event.

The weather proved challenging for the weekend with 10-20 knot winds coming from the southeast, causing unpredictable conditions for the sailors. Although the Hoyas pride themselves on sailing well in difficult conditions, they struggled throughout the weekend.

The A division team was set back by the winds, as they finished with a score of 183, leaving them far from the pack in 11th place out of 20 teams.  Georgetown proved it was a valuable contender by bouncing back in the B division, led by seniors Roger Dorr and Rose Edwards, junior Rebecca Fung and freshman Olivia van den Born.  The B division sailed well through the Sunday conditions, finishing eighth out of 20 teams.

In the B division, the Hoyas collected a pair of wins and finished among the top three teams in five of the races. The A division’s performance hurt the Hoyas’ overall score, as they slipped to seventh place with a final score of 329. Georgetown was just over 30 points behind Stanford, and Old Dominion took the regatta victory.

Georgetown is now ranked No. 3 in coed sailing, while the women’s team ranks No. 8 in the nation.  Next weekend, the Hoyas share sites    as they host many of country’s best teams on the Potomac River for the Arrigan Memorial Regatta. The women’s team will travel to Norfolk, Va., for the MAISA Women’s Championship, which is a major event for the women’s team.
