The Georgetown women’s basketball team competed in the South Point Thanksgiving Shootout in Las Vegas last weekend, facing tough competition against Buffalo and No. 4 Baylor.

On Nov. 23, Georgetown (4-3) fell behind early and trailed Buffalo by eight points after the first quarter. After the Bulls (4-1) hit a three-pointer with three seconds left in the first half, the Hoyas found themselves down by ten points heading into the locker room.

Backed by the 33 point performance of senior guard Cierra Dillard, the Bulls maintained their lead over the Hoyas. Georgetown cut Buffalo’s lead to four with 3:33 left in the fourth quarter, but, after Dillard scored six consecutive points, the Hoyas could not mount a comeback and fell by a score of 64-73.

Junior forward Anita Kelava, who finished with 15 points, led Georgetown in scoring, while graduate student guard Mikayla Venson tallied 12 points. Senior guard Dionna White also contributed a double double, scoring ten points and grabbing 13 rebounds.

Despite out rebounding the Bulls 43-33, the Hoyas struggled from the field, hitting 34.4 percent of their shots while the Bulls shot 40.7 percent. Georgetown also failed to convert from behind the arc, missing all 11 of its three point shots in the first half and hitting four out of 22 three pointers overall.

Georgetown competed on the hardwood again the next day against tough competition against No. 4 Baylor (6-0). Baylor scored the first nine points of the game and finished the first quarter up 22-11. The Bears continued to build their lead in the second quarter and, after a Baylor three pointer with 47 seconds remaining in the half, Georgetown trailed by 23 points. Following the first half, the Hoyas were unable to reduce the Bear’s lead, and Baylor cruised to a 67-46 victory.

In the loss, the Hoyas shot 26.7 percent from the field and 29.6 percent from behind the arc while allowing the Bears to shoot 43.3 percent from the field and 37.5 percent from three. Georgetown was also outrebounded by Baylor 50-33. White finished the game with her second straight double double, leading the team in scoring along with Venson with 12 points.

Head Coach James Howard praised the Hoyas’ performance in the tournament and said that the experience they gained will be helpful as the season goes on.

“Playing the No. 4 team in the country with that type of size could have overpowered us, but we came and we fought. I think this game will help us prepare for later on in the season,” Howard said in an interview with GUHoyas.

Georgetown will return home Nov. 29 in a matchup against Fordham in McDonough Arena at 7 p.m.
