Rosslyn

Rosslyn is a familiar area for most Georgetown students, but many might not know the delicious treasures hidden between its skyscrapers and beyond the GUTS bus stop.

Choupi

1218 19th St. N, Arlington, Va., 22209
0.3 miles from Metro stop
French | $$$$

Don’t let Choupi deceive you. Although it’s a food truck that is only open from 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. on weekends, it is a must-visit for all crepe lovers. Every plain crepe is $3.50, and each topping, be it meat, veggies or nuts, adds an extra $0.50. For a unique crepe, order one with mushroom, turkey and four cheeses. As the chef prepares each crepe, it’s impossible not to notice that he makes every flip and fold with great care, almost treating the thin sheet of crepe as a piece of art. The richness of the cheese, the unique taste of the mushrooms and the tenderness of the turkey perfectly complement the sweetness of the crepe itself. With crispy edges, the crepe has a slightly crunchy texture and an impeccably harmonious blend of flavors. For those with a sweet tooth, indulge in the Nutella and brownie crepe, heavenly for chocolate lovers, whereas the peanut butter and banana crepe will no doubt satiate the peanut butter lovers’ cravings. Choupi doesn’t bother with fancy crepes with complicated fillings. However, it is its very simplicity that speaks to its authenticity.

AllSpice Café

1401 Wilson Blvd #101, Arlington, Va. 22209

I visited the AllSpice Café in the early morning, and I was not surprised to be greeted by a calming tranquility. As the restaurant was just opening, the waiters were just finishing up getting ready for the day. Although the menu presents a variety of inexpensive, classic breakfast choices, stick with the basics, like the Ranchero breakfast wrap ($3.99) or the traditional Egg Sandwich ($2.59). The service is very efficient. Food is delivered within five minutes, piping hot and almost irresistible not to scarf down immediately. The Ranchero burrito features cheddar cheese slowly oozing through fluffy scrambled eggs. The  flavors of rice, black beans and a touch of salsa blended harmoniously, and the protein-packed dish is very filling. The Egg Sandwich, with the golden scrambled eggs stuffed between two pieces of whole grain toasts, is simple but appealing. Lunch options are also available — including a variety of pita sandwiches andvegeration choices — and rarely exceed $6.75.

Rosslyn Coffee & Deli

Tucked around the corner of Wilson Blvd, RosslynCoffee & Deli can easily be missed. Pushing open the door, I was immediately immersed in a cozy and warm ambience. The refrigerators with the dairy products stood on the left, and the snack shelves were orderly clustered further inside. The lengthy list of sandwiches, all made from Boar’s Head products, makes it difficult to settle on just one. For a classic that will do justice to the quality of the food is the Ovengold Turkey Panini with whole-grain bread ($6.25). The saltiness of the slice of ham in this Panini somehow highlighted the tenderness of the turkey breast and, when mingled with the Swiss cheese and Russian dressing, creates a heavenly blend of flavors.

AHRA Cafe & Sandwich Bar

Although it was not even 8 a.m., a line had already formed in front of the counter at AHRA Cafe & Sandwich Bar. Opened not long ago, this cozy little coffee shop has certainly gained much attention. AHRA might be difficult to find at first because it is buried within an office building. With no balmy sunlight sifting through the glass walls when I visited, the place was dimly lit but still cozy. For a lover of flapjacks, try the pancake platter ($4.99), which comes with two pieces of hotcakes, two eggs scrambled and a turkey sausage patty. Arriving in a breakfast box, the dish only requires a five minute wait. Grilled to perfection, the golden pancakes are surprisingly gigantic. The complementary syrup, which somehow has a buttery aroma, coupled perfectly with the butter-milk pancakes. It was, without exaggeration, an enjoyment of both texture and taste. The turkey sausage and the scrambled eggs, though of equally generous portion, paled in comparison to the pancakes. Both had a mild yet not bland taste, perfect to start an energetic day. Rumor has it that the hand-carved sandwiches are AHRA’s absolute specialty. Some appealing options include the roast beef sandwich and the brisket sandwich. The piles of meat and generous portions of bread promise to result in equally sizable sandwiches.
