Late-Game Inconsistency Haunts Hoyas in 2017-18 Campaign

In Patrick Ewing’s first year as the Head Coach of the men’s basketball team, Georgetown finished 15-15 overall and 5-13 in the Big East. After defeating St. John’s twice in the regular season,the Hoyas fell to the Red Storm in the first round of the Big East tournament.

Forward Marcus Derrickson, who entered the NBA draft and recently signed a two-way contract with the Golden State Warriors, averaged 15.9 points and 8.1 rebounds in his final year on the Hilltop.

Ewing Leads Hoyas Into Next Chapter of Legendary Rivalry

Last season, Georgetown fell 86-79 in overtime against Syracuse in Capital One Arena. This year, Head Coach Patrick Ewing will make his return to the Carrier Dome to face the Syracuse Orange and legendary Head Coach Jim Boeheim.

Ewing averaged 15.3 points per game as well as 3.4 blocks per game in his four year career at Georgetown, and defeated Syracuse in the Carrier Dome in a heated contest in January of 1983.

High School Stars McClung, Akinjo Represent Georgetown’s Future 

Freshmen guards Mac McClung and James Akinjo will begin their Georgetown careers on Nov. 6 against the University of Maryland Eastern Shore. McClung, a three-star recruit, averaged 38.4 points per game as a high school senior last year, while Akinjo, a four-star recruit, earned the Most Valuable Player Award in the 2017 AAU Peach Jam Tournament.

Backcourt, Govan Provide Offensive Balance

Looking to lead the Hoyas to their first NCAA Tournament appearance since the 2014-15 season, center Jessie Govan will return to the Hilltop for his senior season.

“If I go out on that note, being the one to be the leader of this team that goes back to the NCAA tournament, gets Georgetown back on the map, I’ll think that would be great for me,” Govan said at men’s basketball media day.

Big East 2018-19 Season Projections

After finishing sixth in the Big East standings last season, Georgetown will again face strong competition in the conference.

No. 9 Villanova will defend its 2018 National Championship, while Marquette’s junior guard Markus Howard and St. John’s junior guard Shamorie Ponds will cause headaches for defenses across the Big East.

Howard’s First Season Capped by WNIT Berth 

GUHOYAS

Last season, the Hoyas advanced to the second round of the WNIT for the first time since 2009. Graduate student guard Mikayla Venson averaged 13.2 points per game last season, her first with the Hoyas after transferring from the University of Virginia.

 White, Adomako, Venson Poised to Lead Hoyas

Senior guard Dionna White was named the Big East Defensive Player of the Year last season and led the Hoyas in scoring. She will return to a talented back court that includes graduate students Dorothy Adomako and Mikayla Venson.

Hoyas Seek Improvement Amid Challenging Schedule

Georgetown will have difficult nonconference matchups this year, as it will face Baylor and North Carolina State in the South Point Thanksgiving Shootout in Las Vegas. Baylor was unbeaten in the Big 12 Conference last season, while North Carolina State reached the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Tournament.

Women’s Big East 2018-19 Projections

With the upcoming debuts of two transfers, senior guard Brianna Jones and junior forward Anita Kelava, the Hoyas are poised to make a run in the Big East.

However, with Marquette returning its entire starting five from last season and a strong DePaul team welcoming back two of its best players, Georgetown will have a tough road in conference play.
