BASEBALL | Pitchers Struggle, Hoyas Lose 4th Straight

The Georgetown baseball team’s recent slide in performance continued Wednesday night, as the Hoyas lost 10-2 to the UMBC Retrievers (14-17, 7-5 America East).

The loss came on the heels of a losing weekend series against Seton Hall (22-16, 5-4 Big East), where Georgetown (21-19, 0-6 Big East) dropped to 0-6 in Big East play.

Graduate outfielder Zach Racusin notched three hits and a walk in Wednesday’s contest, reaching base in all four of his plate appearances. Racusin also collected two outfield assists, throwing out runners at third base and at home.

“I definitely take a lot of pride in my defense,” Racusin said. “When there’s an opportunity to help the team out and generate runs, whether it’s defensively or offensively, it’s very much important to us.”

Despite the strong defense from the graduate outfielder, Blue and Gray pitching faltered. Starting pitcher Nick Leonard surrendered two runs in his 8/3 innings of work, while the Georgetown bullpen continued to struggle, allowing seven runs over 7/3 innings.

The loss marked Georgetown’s fourth consecutive losing effort, and the seventh loss in its past eight ballgames.

“I think we’re pressing as a whole,” Wilk said. “We’re trying to hit a seven-run home run, trying to make the perfect pitch, the perfect throw, or the perfect catch, and the game’s not meant to be played that way.”

After being swept at home by Creighton, the Hoyas’ conference struggles continued against Seton Hall. Senior starting pitcher Simon Mathews opened the series for Georgetown, but could not make it past the fifth inning after allowing six runs, three earned, on eight hits and three walks with five strikeouts. Georgetown went on to lose 11-2.

“To me, it’s all about his command of his baseball. Last year, he could almost throw that baseball wherever he wanted to. And this year, it seems to be getting more of the plate than he or we would like,” Wilk said.

Sophomore pitcher Jack Cushing followed on the mound Saturday for Georgetown, throwing five innings while allowing only three earned runs on six hits and five walks. However, a costly error by senior Eric Garza to open the fifth eventually allowed the leadoff man to score and proved to be the difference in the game as the Hoyas fell 5-4.

Georgetown responded with another poor defensive effort in the series finale on Sunday, losing 10-5 while committing four errors in the game. Junior Kevin Superko started for the Hoyas, but fell to 6-2 on the year after allowing four runs over five innings on six hits and two walks while striking out one.

“Over the course of a long season, things are going to happen. Mistakes happen. That’s baseball,” Racusin said. “The key to our success is going to be continuing to pick each other up, and staying focused on the moment in spite of whatever happens.”

Georgetown’s next series comes against Villanova (9-23, 2-4 Big East) this weekend, where the Hoyas look to claim their first Big East Conference win.

“I think that if we stick to our process and we continue to focus and put our best effort out there, that the results are going to come,” Racusin said. “We just got to be patient and we got to trust that.”

The series begins Friday at 3 p.m., followed by Saturday’s game at 2 p.m. and Sunday’s series finale at 1 p.m. All three games will be played at the Villanova Ballpark at Plymouth, with live stats available at guhoyas.com.
