The Georgetown field hockey team (4-0) is on a roll, kicking off the 2018 season with four straight wins. For the first time in over 15 years, the Hoyas have not lost a game over their opening two weekends.
The Hoyas boast a stout defense, conceding two total goals and recording three shutouts in their first four games.
Following two close road wins against Davidson and Appalachian State, Georgetown ended a strong week at home, defeating both Sacred Heart University and Saint Francis University.
The Hoyas won 2-0 in their matchup against Sacred Heart on Aug. 31, maintaining their unbeaten record and spot atop the Big East standings.
Freshman Sydney Stephenson started the game off with a penalty goal two minutes into the match. Sophomore Ali Cronin provided the assist, her first of two over the weekend.
The Georgetown defense held strong throughout the game and did not allow a shot on target for the first 12 minutes of the match.
Sacred Heart mustered one shot on target in the first 35 minutes, which freshman goalkeeper Ciara Weets saved, her first of nine total saves in the game.
Sophomore Cami Osborne sealed the win in the second half with her first goal of the season. The Hoyas outshot the Pioneers 19-16 in the match and recorded one more shot on target than their opponent.
Head Coach Christy Longacre believes the best is yet to come for her team.
“I’m so excited for this team and I truly believe the sky is the limit for them,” Longacre said in an interview with GUHoyas. “They continue to build from each game and improve and we hope to continue that through the rest of the season.”
Two days after their victory over Sacred Heart, the Hoyas extended their winning streak to four in an offensive battle against Saint Francis.
Osborne once again led the charge, scoring the first goal of the game 10 minutes into the contest.
Following Osborne’s opening goal, Saint Francis responded with a goal in the 17th minute to tie the game 1-1. The Hoyas remained poised and Osborne once again led the charge with a goal at the 30 minute mark.
The Red Flash grabbed a goal back, but were unable to mount a comeback and the game ended 4-2 in the Hoyas’ favor.
Osborne leads the team with six total points this season and was named to the Big East Weekly Honor Roll for her performance over the weekend. She has earned the award on four occasions throughout her Georgetown career.
Through the first four games of the season, the Hoyas are tied for first in the Big East with the University of Connecticut and Old Dominion.
Georgetown will play its third consecutive home game Sept. 7 against Long Island University Brooklyn before travelling to Philadelphia on Sept. 14 for a Big East matchup against Villanova.
