The Georgetown football team earned its second straight victory last Saturday, defeating Lafayette 13-6 on the road.
Junior quarterback Gunther Johnson commanded the Georgetown (3-4, 2-0 Patriot League) offense against Lafayette (1-5, 0-2 Patriot League). He completed 11 of 21 passes for 73 yards through the air and ran the ball eight times for 20 yards, scoring both Hoya touchdowns.
Johnson enjoys getting involved in the rushing attack.
“I love running the ball, so it was great to get in the end zone on the ground,” Johnson said.
Sophomore wide receiver Max Edwards, the Hoyas’ leading receiver on the day, added four catches for 40 yards.
Sophomore running back Jackson Saffold rushed for 43 yards, while freshman running back Herman Moultrie III notched 40.
The Hoyas performed well despite their low offensive numbers, according to Head Coach Rob Sgarlata.
“The stats don’t tell the story of this game. Our kids just kept coming after it,” Sgarlata said. “We talked about winning your one-on-one battle. I think they did a great job of dealing with adversity today.”
Early in the second quarter, junior defensive back Leon Agee recorded an interception off a tipped pass. The turnover gave Georgetown’s offense the ball deep in Lafayette territory.
Johnson ran the ball in from the 6-yard line to cap a seven-play scoring drive. Georgetown scored on its ensuing possession on another quarterback run.
The Hoyas led 13-0 early in the second quarter and headed into halftime leading 13-3. After halftime, the Georgetown offense stalled at 13 points, leaving the defense a narrow lead to protect.
The defensive unit was up to the task, allowing three points in the second half. Sophomore linebacker Xavier Reddick totaled a team-high eight tackles.
The Hoyas’ senior secondary duo, Ramon Lyons and Blaise Brown, each had seven tackles. Lyons also came away with three pass breakups and one of Georgetown’s three interceptions on the day.
Junior defensive lineman Khristian Tate recorded two of Georgetown’s four sacks. Sophomore linebacker Owen Kessler also got in the action by recovering a fumble forced by Brown in the fourth quarter.
Sophomore defensive back Ahmad Wilson recorded an interception to seal the victory late in the fourth quarter for the Hoyas.
On special teams, junior punter Brad Hurst pinned Lafayette many times near their own end zone.
Sgarlata emphasized Hurst’s key role in preventing Lafayette from scoring a touchdown.
“Brad Hurst came up big for us in controlling the field position, and that really was the difference in the game,” Sgarlata said.
The Hoyas will return to the Hilltop riding an undefeated conference record. They will aim to get back to .500 as they face Lehigh on Saturday, Oct. 20, at 2 p.m.
