Georgetown University softball hit the road to play a three-game series against Seton Hall in South Orange, N.J. on March 17-18. Coming off a 4-2 win against Hampton University just two days prior, the Georgetown Hoyas hoped to carry their momentum into their series against the Seton Hall Pirates, but ultimately fell 2-1. 

The Hoyas (6-18, 2-4 Big East) lost 2-4 in their first game against the Pirates (12-10, 3-3 Big East). Georgetown struggled in the first inning, as Seton Hall was the first to strike — Pirates outfielder Abby Wingo scored in the bottom of the first inning with an RBI off a single to center field. 

The Hoyas continued to struggle offensively throughout the rest of the first game. In the third inning, Seton Hall added another 2 scores to its lead, improving to 3-0 against Georgetown.

Senior infielder Sophia Scarangella broke the scoreless streak in the top of the fifth inning, hitting a double to right field and sending graduate shortstop/second baseman Morgan Zamora across the plate. The Pirates responded with another run of their own, however.

In the sixth inning, graduate infielder/catcher Mae Forshey hit a home run to left field to cut Seton Hall’s lead to 2. But the Hoyas were ultimately unable to cut the deficit in the final inning, and the 4-2 score would stand.

Losing to the Pirates in a close game, the Hoyas hoped to win the next two games and take home the series on Saturday. 

In the second game against Seton Hall, Georgetown started off hot in the first inning. With two Hoyas on base, senior infielder Lorena Vasquez-Inzunza hit a double out to right field to score Forshey and Zamora for a 2-0 lead. 

In the second inning, sophomore pitcher Kayla Dunn managed a crucial strikeout to keep the Hoyas on top as the Pirates left two runners in scoring position. Dunn continued to put up a solid performance as she registered back-to-back outs after allowing two runners on base in the bottom of the third.

However, the Pirates struck back in the fourth inning. A couple of RBI singles and a solo homer gave Seton Hall a 3-2 lead as both teams headed into the fifth inning. Seton Hall continued to build on its offensive momentum and scored a run on an error to build its lead to 4-2 in the fifth inning.

Dunn cut the lead to 1 after hitting an RBI double to score Forshey, and the Hoyas continued to fight to reduce the deficit. These efforts were helped by junior pitcher Julia Parker, who sent the Pirates down in order in the bottom of the sixth.

With three Hoyas on base in the seventh inning, Georgetown had the opportunity to win the game. However, they were ultimately unable to bring the runners home, as Seton Hall dug deep to hold onto its 4-3 lead. 

Later that day, Georgetown looked for a win in the third game of the series after two close losses. In the first two innings, both teams went scoreless as graduate pitcher Brooke Plonka tallied 2 strikeouts for the Hoyas. 

In the third inning, Zamora hit a sacrifice fly to send first-year outfielder Claire Turner across the plate. The Hoyas doubled their lead to 2-0 after a catching error allowed graduate outfielder Cameron Kondo to score. 

The Hoyas continued to build on their lead as a double by Scarangella and a ground ball from Turner sent junior first baseman Kiaris Alvarado Rojas and first-year outfielder Gabby Park across the plate. A homer from Kondo sent Scarangella home and improved the score to 6-0 going into the seventh.

In the seventh, a ground ball from junior third baseman Samantha Miller and a single from Kondo sent three more Hoyas across the plate. A wild pitch also allowed Kondo to score, which brought the Georgetown lead to 10. Seton Hall tacked on 1 run in the final inning, but it was too little, too late. The Hoyas took home the win 10-1 in the last game but fell in the overall series.

Next, Georgetown will head to Storrs, Conn., from March 24-26 to take on the University of Connecticut Huskies (15-8, 4-2 Big East) in a three-game series.
