VOLLEYBALL | Hoyas Fall to Blue Jays, Defeat Friars in 5 Sets

The Georgetown women’s volleyball team travelled to Omaha, Neb.,  and Providence, R.I., for two Big East matches last weekend, falling to Creighton and defeating Providence in five sets.

KIRK ZIESER/THE HOYA | Junior outside hitter Iva Vujosevic has 294 kills and 214 digs this season for the Hoyas.

The Hoyas (15-13, 8-8 Big East) struggled in Omaha as they fell to the Bluejays (24-4, 26-0 Big East) in three straight sets, losing in each set by five or more points. The Bluejays utilized their home-court advantage to shut out out the Hoyas. Senior outside hitter Alyssa Sinnette recorded nine kills, while sophomore setter Margo Pivonka added 30 assists. However, Creighton’s senior outside hitter Taryn Kloth dominated in the match, notching 14 kills.

Two days later against Providence (8-19, 2-14 Big East), Georgetown delivered a strong performance in a tightly contested match. The Hoyas defeated the Friars in a match decided by five sets.

Georgetown won the first two sets by scores of 25-22 and 25-23. Sinnette again led the team on offense, recording 20 kills. Providence surged to take the third and fourth sets by scores of 22-25 and 20-25. Georgetown won the final set by a score of 15-12, led by senior libero Kenzie Higareda and senior middle blocker Symone Speech.

With their win over the Friars, the Hoyas are in a tie for the fourth and final spot in the Big East tournament. They have also recorded their most wins in over five seasons.

On Friday, Georgetown takes on Xavier in McDonough Arena and could potentially clinch a spot in the Big East tournament with a victory. Following Friday’s matchup, the Hoyas will face Butler in McDonough Arena on Saturday at 5 p.m.
