The Georgetown women’s tennis team suffered its second straight defeat of the season in a 7-0 loss to Liberty University on Saturday, Jan. 25. 

The Blue and Gray (0-2) first conceded a point in the doubles matches before losing five of the six matches in straight sets to give Liberty (2-1) the 7-0 victory. 

The Hoyas were swept during the doubles competition, allowing the Flames a one-point lead entering the singles competition. First in the doubles matchups, freshmen Olivia Ashton and Agata Mikos were overcome by the Flames’ Kalani Soli and Eloise Saraty, dropping the match 6-2. Despite earning an early 2-1 lead, the pair soon relinquished the advantage as Soli and Saraty cut down the deficit to take the 6-2 win. 

Soli would prove a key player for Liberty on Saturday, finding success in both her doubles and singles matches. Soli remains the reigning Atlantic Sun Conference Player of the Week and secured her 17th straight singles dual match win against the Hoyas. With the loss, the Ashton and Mikos pair falls to 0-2 on the season in doubles matchups. 

Liberty’s doubles pairing of Alexandra Almborg and Grace Hashiguchi captured a deuce point in the first game against Georgetown junior Sofie Moenster and freshman Chloe Bendetti and wrapped up its 6-2 victory to clinch the doubles point. The defeat keeps Bendetti and Moenster in search of their first win as a pair in the 2020 season. 

Sophomore Elena De Santis and senior Anna Short were then defeated by the Flames’ pairing of Tiffany Nguyen and Micaela Ode Mitre 7-5 to complete the sweep for Liberty. De Santis and Short now also sit at 0-2 this season.

The first match of the singles competition was fought between Liberty’s Soli and Georgetown’s Moenster by a 6-1, 6-4 count to propel the home team to a 2-0 advantage. 

Georgetown’s Mikos was then defeated by Liberty’s Almborg in a straight-set triumph, falling 6-3, 6-2. This defeat pushed the Flames up to a 3-0 lead and marked Almborg’s third win of the season while Mikos recorded her first singles loss of the season. 

The Hoyas’ loss was sealed with Liberty’s Nguyen, who prevailed against Georgetown’s De Santis. De Santis erased a 5-2 second set to briefly take a 6-5 lead before Nguyen took the next game and won the tiebreaker 7-1 to close out the match. De Santis records the loss as her first of this spring season, winning her previous singles matchup in Maryland in three sets. 

Ashton remained competitive in her match, dropping the first game 6-4 before answering with a 6-4 victory of her own. Liberty’s Esther Lovato, however, dominated the tiebreaker 6-3 to take the match and extend Georgetown’s deficit to five against the Flames. 

To round out the day, Flames’ player Micaela Ode Mitre shut out Short in two straight sets 7-5, 6-4 while freshman Carmen Aizpurua fell to Saraty 7-6 (8-6), 6-1. 

The Hoyas will seek their first victory of the season at West Point, N.Y. against Army on Feb. 1. The start time is still to be announced.
