MEN’S BASKETBALL | GU Holds Off Richmond to Remain Unbeaten

SUBUL MALIK FOR THE HOYA
Senior guard Jonathan Mulmore scored a career-high 15 points to go along with eight assists in Georgetown’s win over Richmond.

The Georgetown men’s basketball team won its first road game of the season Saturday as it took down the Richmond Spiders 82-76.

Five players scored in double figures for the Hoyas (4-0), including junior forward Marcus Derrickson, who led the team with 16 points and nine rebounds. Senior guard Jonathan Mulmore scored a career-high 15 points and added eight assists as well.

Georgetown led 13-8 early after freshman forward Jamorko Pickett’s steal and layup, but its lead did not last long as Richmond (1-5) took back the lead at 15-14 and kept it for most of the first half.

The Hoyas struggled to stop Richmond’s sophomore guard De’Monte Buckingham and redshirt freshman forward Grant Golden, who combined to score 29 first-half points. For the game, the duo scored 52 of Richmond’s 76 total points.

At the end of the half, Georgetown went on a quick 10-3 run and regained the lead at 40-39, capped by sophomore guard Jagan Mosely’s pair of free throws. Georgetown shot over 52 percent from the floor in the first half, but Richmond edged the Blue and Gray 20 to 14 in points in the paint.

Georgetown and Richmond exchanged leads for the first five minutes of the second half, but the Hoyas took the lead for good after junior center Jessie Govan’s layup with 14:45 left in the contest.

The game stayed close, however, with Georgetown leading 76-74. With 1:27 left to play, Pickett nailed a three-pointer to seal the win.

Georgetown played impressively on the offensive end in the second half. The team made five of its seven three-pointers and 13 of its 14 free throws to hold off Richmond down the stretch.

Georgetown will look to continue its undefeated start to the season as it returns home to host the University of Maine (1-5) Tuesday night at Capital One Arena. The game can be watched live on Fox Sports 1 and heard locally on 99.1 FM at 8:30 p.m.
