Although both teams’ seasons ended in disappointment in the NCAA tournament, the Georgetown men’s and women’s soccer teams are showing promise as they prepare for the upcoming season. Recently, the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) recognized that promise, ranking the Hoyas’ men’s team No. 3 in the nation while slotting the women’s team at No. 25.

The men’s team finished 14-4-5 last season, suffering a heartbreaking loss to eventual national champion Virginia in the Elite Eight of the NCAA tournament. The team lost several players to graduation, including goalkeeper Tomas Gomez, midfielder Tyler Rudy and forward Austin Martz.

Still, the Hoyas will have plenty of talent returning to the Hilltop for this season. Junior defender Joshua Yaro, a First Team All-American and potential top pick in the MLS Draft, turned down the pros to return to Georgetown. The team will also feature last year’s two highest scorers, senior forward Brandon Allen, a Third Team All-American, and sophomore midfielder Arun Basuljevic, last season’s Big East Freshman of the Year.

Senior midfielder Keegan Rosenberry, senior defender Cole Seiler, junior midfielder Bakie Goodman and junior forward Alex Muyl are also among last season’s starters who will return in 2015. The team will also bring in a highly touted recruiting class, including goalkeeper JT Marcinkowski, who was called in to play for the US Under-18 National Team and will be part of a battle to replace Gomez as the team’s starting keeper.

The team’s combination of a wealth of experienced players and promising young talent should make it one of the best teams in the country, as recognized by the NSCAA.

The Hoyas’ schedule features some of the best competition in the nation. Prior to the season, the men’s team will play three exhibition games, including games against No. 15 Syracuse and No. 2 Virginia. During the regular season, the Hoyas’ schedule includes No. 25 Akron, No. 1 UCLA, No. 7 Providence, No. 13 Maryland, No. 19 Xavier and No. 6 Creighton. The games against Virginia, Akron, UCLA, Providence, Maryland and Creighton will take place on campus at Shaw Field.

The women’s team had an 11-5-6 record last season, falling to Virginia Tech in the second round of the NCAA tournament. The Hoyas also lost several important players to graduation, including star midfielder Daphne Corboz, who now plays for Manchester City in England. Corboz, who was named a Second Team All-American, Big East Offensive Player and Midfielder of the Year, recorded 18 goals and 12 assists in her senior season.

Sophomore midfielder Rachel Corboz, Daphne’s younger sister, will take on a larger role in her second season after registering four goals and eight assists as a freshman. Junior forward Grace Damaska and graduate student forward Audra Ayotte will also return to provide additional offense.

Senior defender Marina Paul, a First Team All-Big East selection last year, will return to lead the defense. Graduate student goalkeeper Emma Newins, senior midfielder Sarah Adams and Rachel Corboz were all selected to the All-Big East Second Team, and all three will return in 2015.

There is no doubt that Daphne Corboz will be tough to replace, but if the team’s younger players, including Rachel Corboz, are able to rise to the occasion, the Hoyas have a great deal of potential.

The Hoyas will also play a challenging schedule. They will play an exhibition match against No. 12 West Virginia, and will also take on No. 13 Virginia Tech and No. 21 DePaul during the regular season.

The women’s team, led by Head Coach Dave Nolan, will open its regular season schedule Aug. 21 against James Madison at the JMU Invitational. Head Coach Brian Wiese will lead the men’s team on a road trip to begin the season Aug. 28 against Florida Gulf Coast.
