Two members of the Georgetown sailing team, sophomore Carly Broussard and freshman Ford McCann, advanced to the individual sailing national championships on Nov. 3, earning two top-five finishes.

McCann placed third in the competition, while Broussard earned fifth place.

McCann finished first in three of the 14 races in over the weekend and placed in the top five in six other races. Broussard earned 83 points in 14 races, grabbing two wins and seven total top-five finishes.

With a two-monthlong break until the Rose Bowl Regatta on Jan. 5, Head Coach Michael Callahan said the team’s depth will be crucial going into its winter and spring seasons.

“The deepest teams tend to win,” Callahan said in an interview with The Hoya. “Some good kids that are good backups will have to sail their best.”

The women’s team, which graduated all of its starters, will be looking for multiple sailors to step up and contribute in the spring.

“We are looking for [eight girls] to separate themselves down the stretch,” Callahan said.

The Georgetown co-ed team was ranked third in the nation at the end of the fall season, marking a successful fall season for the Hoyas.

“The co-ed team ended up ranked number 3 in the country, about as high as I thought we could get,” Callahan said.

The men’s and women’s teams will next compete at the Rose Bowl Regatta on Jan. 5 in Long Beach, Calif.
