For the second consecutive week, senior middle-distance runner Amos Bartelsmeyer was named Big East Men’s Track Athlete of the Week for his performance in the Hoyas’ distance medley relays this weekend. At the JDL Fast Track Last Chance Invational in Winston-Salem, N.C., the DMR squad ran second-fastest time in school history.

The Hoyas sent two relay teams, one from the men’s side and one from the women’s side, to the event, which is the final meet before the Big East Championships on Feb. 23 and 24.

The men’s DMR squad — composed of junior middle-distance runner Spencer Brown, sophomore middle-distance runner Kenny Rowe, freshman middle-distance runner Rey Rivera and Bartelsmeyer — won the relay with a time of 9:28.21.

Director of Track and Field Julie Culley emphasized the team’s achievement and performance.

“Any time we can be close to breaking a school record, we are really excited,” Culley wrote in an email to The Hoya. “Our staff and athletes are aware of the significance of each and every one of the records in our books, who those athletes are or were and what it means to be ranked among them. We are excited to add yet another relay and yet another athlete like Amos to the list.”

The women’s team also sent a DMR team to North Carolina, led by senior middle-distance runner

, senior sprinter Jody-Ann Knight, freshman middle-distance runner Olivia Arizin and graduate student middle-distance runner Meredith Rizzo.

The women’s DMR squad finished fourth in the race with a time of 11:25.49.

Culley explained how both the men’s and women’s DMR teams prepared for the relays during practice and how the runners were selected.

“The relays we sent to North Carolina were determined by who the fastest individual is at each leg and what our most competitive line-up will be. They review a few hand-offs in practice, but it isn’t essential for the hand-offs to be perfectly clean the way it may be in other relay events,” Culley wrote.

The composition of the relays will look slightly different in the next few weeks, Culley said.

“We will run [DMRs] at Big East, but they won’t be the same line-up as we raced in North Carolina nor will they be the same line-up as the men will run at NCAA’s,” Culley wrote.

With the Big East Championships coming up this weekend, Culley is looking for her motivated team to improve on last year’s performances.

“Our goal year-over-year at Big East is to be more and more competitive and score more and more points.” Culley wrote. “We are hopeful both teams will be higher in the rankings than a year ago and we look forward to fighting for every single place and every single point against our Big East rivals this weekend.”

The Georgetown men’s and women’s track teams will compete at the Big East Indoor Track and Field Championships on Feb. 23 and 24 in Staten Island, N.Y.
