The Georgetown volleyball team went undefeated last weekend, sweeping three matches at the Dig the District Invitational in McDonough Arena.

Georgetown (8-5, 1-0 Big East) opened the series on Friday against Morgan State (6-8). The match was more competitive than the straight set score would have suggested, as each set was decided by two points: 25-23, 25-23 and 26-24.

With the score deadlocked at 24 in the third frame, the Hoyas closed out the win with kills from senior middle blocker Symone Speech and sophomore outside hitter Riley Wertzberger.

The Hoyas recorded 51 kills to the Bears’ 35 and notched 14 more assists than their opponents.

Going into the match, junior outside hitter Iva Vujosevic led the Hoyas with 3.56 kills per set. Against Morgan State, Vujosevic continued her strong attacking play and recorded 17 total kills while Speech added nine.

Sophomore setter Margo Pivonka led with 40 assists in the match, 11 more than any other player.

The Hoyas continued their winning ways in the second match of the weekend on Saturday morning, defeating Alabama A&M (4-12). Georgetown won the first two frames 25-19 and 25-21, but dropped the third by a score of 10-25.

Georgetown bounced back after losing its first set of the weekend to take the fourth set against Alabama A&M 25-10 and seal the victory.

Starting with a 4-0 run in the final set, the Hoyas led throughout to win the frame by 15 points.

After clinching the win for the Hoyas in the first match, Wertzberger led all players with 15 kills in the match. Senior libero Kenzie Higareda tied for the match high in digs with 18.

Georgetown closed out the series with a third win to sweep the tournament, beating Loyola Maryland (4-8) in straight sets on Saturday night.

The Hoyas won the first two sets decisively, 25-18 and 25-9, and edged out the third by a score of 25-23 to close out the sweep against the Greyhounds. Trailing 25-18 in the first set, Georgetown sparked an 8-0 run to take the frame 25-18.

Georgetown controlled the second set and earned a 25-9 victory, but the third and final set remained close throughout. With the score tied at 23, Wertzberger recorded a kill, and Vujosevic added a block to close out the match and Georgetown’s undefeated weekend.

Speech recorded 13 kills in the contest with no errors while junior right side Margo Snipe added seven kills without an attack error. Snipe also led all players with four blocks.

Speech was named the Big East Offensive Player of the Week for her performance over the weekend and was added to the Dig the District Invitational All-Tournament Team. She has totaled 1,196 kills in her career with Georgetown.

The Hoyas won 9 of 10 sets over the weekend, improving their record to 7-5. Georgetown will travel to Villanova on Saturday in a Big East Conference matchup.
