The Georgetown volleyball team hosted its first tournament of the season last weekend at the Georgetown Classic, earning two victories in four matches.
The Hoyas (4-5, 0-0 Big East) began the series on Friday against Norfolk State, winning comfortably in straight sets by scores of 25-13, 25-17 and 25-10 respectively. Senior middle blocker Symone Speech recorded 15 kills in the match, the most for either team.
The Hoyas scored seven of the final nine points in the third set, closing out the match on a 5-0 run.
Georgetown was unable to win its second game of the day, falling 2-3 against the University of Pennsylvania in a back-and-forth matchup. In the match, both teams exchanged leads 16 times and were tied on 33 different occasions.
Penn won the first set 25-22 despite the efforts of Georgetown junior outside hitter Iva Vujosevic, who recorded eight of her 20 match-leading kills in the set.
Down 23-22, the Hoyas scored three consecutive points to win the second set 25-23, tying the match at 1-1.
The Quakers edged the third set 25-21 and finished the frame strongly, scoring six out of seven points and committing one attack error.
Both teams continued to trade sets, as the Hoyas won the fourth frame to force a decisive fifth and final set. Georgetown relied on its senior leaders to close out the set, as Speech and senior outside hitter Alyssa Sinnette notched consecutive kills to win the set 25-18.
The fifth set, like the four sets prior, remained close throughout. The teams were deadlocked at 10-10 and 14-14. Both teams appeared poised to start a run and win the set, but Penn emerged victorious, scoring the final two points and defeating Georgetown three sets to two.
Georgetown returned to action on Saturday against George Mason.
Sinnette continued her strong performances, notching 12 kills against the Patriots. Senior outside hitter Olivia King led Georgetown with 15 kills. Sophomore setter Margo Pivonka set the tone for the Hoya offense, recording 41 assists in the match.
Georgetown jumped out to an early 2-0 lead, taking the first comfortably 25-14 while edging the second set 25-22. After dropping the third set 15-25, Georgetown was able to close the match out in the fourth set, earning a 3-1 victory
Georgetown concluded its weekend slate of matches against UNC Wilmington on a record-setting evening in McDonough Arena.
Senior libero Kenzie Higareda broke Georgetown’s program record for digs in the third set, notching her 1,632 career dig.
After dropping the first set 19-25, Higareda led Georgetown on a 12-3 run and a second set victory. The Hoyas also took the third set, but were unable to close out the match as the Seahawks rallied to win the final two sets 25-19 and 15-9.
Georgetown split both games across two days for the second consecutive weekend and will be back in action on September 14 against the University of Memphis in McDonough Arena.
