The Georgetown women’s soccer team traveled to Pennsylvania last week to face off against rival Villanova University at the Higgins Soccer Complex in Villanova, Pa., before traveling to Providence College, where it extended its winning streak to seven games. 

In their second Big East matchup of the season, the Hoyas (8-2-1, 3-0 Big East) opened with two shots in the first four minutes of play against Villanova’s Wildcats (5-4-3, 1-1-1 Big East). 

Despite the rainy conditions, the Hoyas were able to maintain offensive pressure and tally eight shots in the first 45 minutes of the match. Despite promising chances that arose off a header from sophomore defender Jenna Royson, which was saved by the Villanova keeper, and multiple shots from senior forward Paula Germino-Watnick and senior defender Meaghan Nally, the Hoyas were unable to capitalize in the first half. 

The Hoyas’ defense held the Wildcats to three shots on goal in the first, one of which was saved by freshman keeper Anna Leat. 

Just 43 seconds after the whistle blew to signal kickoff in the second half, Royson led an attack with a dribble to the end line, crossing the ball to graduate forward Amanda Carolan, who then redirected it to junior forward Jenna Menta in the box. Menta capitalized on the assist, slotting the ball past the Villanova keeper to propel Georgetown to a 1-0 lead at the start of the second half. 

Senior midfielder Sarah Trissel followed the goal with a shot four minutes later, powering a header into the hands of the Wildcat keeper. Another opportunity arose in the 64th minute off Germino-Watnick’s foot, although the attempt was quickly shut down by the opposing keeper. 

In the 80th minute, Germino-Watnick took to the penalty mark after freshman midfielder Julia Leas was fouled in the box, finishing the set piece to increase Georgetown’s lead to two. 

The Georgetown defense closed out the game by holding Villanova to three shots in the second half, two of which were on goal. Leat recorded three saves in the 2-0 victory to secure her fifth shutout of the season and the team’s seventh. The Hoyas tallied 15 shots on the day — five on goal — and earned five corner kicks to the Wildcats’ two. 

Georgetown closed out the week with another away conference matchup against Providence (7-4-1, 2-1-0 Big East). The Friars earned the first shot of the day in the 14th minute, slotting the ball wide of the net. Providence recorded two more shots before Georgetown responded with its first in the 25th minute. Despite the few opportunities to start the first half, the Hoyas soon found several offensive chances as they recorded seven shots in the first half to the Friars’ four. 

Scoring broke open shortly after the Hoyas’ first shot, with Carolan finishing off an assist by sophomore forward Boo Jackson in the 28th minute to secure a 1-0 lead. Carolan successfully struck again in the 32nd minute, this time off an assist from Jackson and senior midfielder Carson Nizialek. The pair of goals moved Carolan into the fourth spot on Georgetown’s all-time scoring list and sent the Hoyas to the locker room with a 2-0 lead at the half.

Georgetown attacked the Providence defensive line from the start of the second half. The Hoyas tallied 10 shots in the first 30 minutes before landing a third goal in the 75th minute. Menta received the ball in the box after a shot by Germino-Watnick was deflected by the Providence keeper, passing the ball into the back of the net. Germino-Watnick put the game away with a goal of her own off an assist by Jackson in the 85th minute, leading Georgetown to a 4-0 victory. 

On the day, the Hoyas recorded 21 total shots, with 14 on net as compared to the Friars’ six, two of which were on frame. The shutout marks Georgetown’s eighth of the season. Moreover, Georgetown has not lost a Big East matchup since 2017, recording its 15th-straight conference victory. 

Leat earned the titles of Big East Goalkeeper of the Week and Freshman of the Week for her fifth and sixth shutouts of the season, as she has been absolutely instrumental to the team’s success thus far. Carolan and Nally were also recognized on the Weekly Honor Roll for their performances in the Villanova and Providence games. 

Georgetown returns home Thursday to host Xavier University. The Hoyas faced the Musketeers twice last year, tying 0-0 through double overtime in their first meeting and winning 3-1 in the Big East tournament. Kickoff is scheduled for 3 p.m. at Shaw Field.
