The Georgetown University women’s tennis team competed in ITA Regionals in Blacksburg, Va., last weekend, their third meet of the season as the team continues to improve. 

The team faced opponents from the College of William & Mary, Pennsylvania State University, the United States Naval Academy, the University of Maryland, Radford University, the University of Richmond, Liberty University and The George Washington University. Against the stiffest competition the Hoyas have faced in this young season, they found themselves unable to draw victory in any of their matches.

Junior Sofie Moenster, a former Danish U-18 singles and doubles champion, fell in a tight fight against William and Mary’s Vitoria Okuyama 7-5, 6-7 and 6-4. She was also later defeated by Penn State’s Olivia Ryan by default, when she did not play in her match. Moenster achieved victories earlier this season at the Bedford Cup during the season opener in September. 

Freshman Agata Mikos was defeated by Kaylah Hodge from the Naval Academy 6-1, 4-6, 7-5, and later fell to Maryland’s Eva Alexandrova 7-6, 1-6, 1-0. Mikos had previously defeated Saya Usui of Maryland at the Navy Fall Invite in early October, recording lots of matches this fall slate for a freshman. 

Sophomore Elena De Santis faced Drousile Dzeubou of Radford and Melis Bayrataroglu of GW in consecutive matches as well, ultimately dropping both matches. This performance did not live up to her earlier four-set victories in the Navy Fall Invite earlier this month and after a generally strong freshman season.

Doubles teams of Mikos and freshman Olivia Ashton as well as De Santis and senior Anna Short fell to Richmond and Liberty. Overall, the team has had a strong showing in doubles this season with two victories this season, but fell short 8-4 and 8-3. 

One weak performance is not indicative of a poor season, since the Hoyas have seen victories and close matches earlier this season. As they move toward the upcoming Big East tournament, they will still have the opportunity to be successful and win more matches.

Georgetown will be back in action this weekend in Boston, Mass., at the Harvard Invite against another strong field of opponents as its looks for different results.
